BMSB REGULATIONS

The fumigation season to prevent the proliferation of the marmorated stink bug (BMSB) will begin on September 1, 2023 and end on April 30, 2024 inclusive (date of shipment) for your shipments bound for Australia and New Zealand. We would like to remind you of the various measures available to combat this pest.

BMSB : WHAT IS IT?

The Brown Marmorated Stink Bug (BMSB) is an insect native to Asia, considered a pest because it damages crops, orchards and trees in order to feed. This insect, which is present on the European and American continents in addition to Asia, is the subject of measures to prevent its introduction and proliferation in Australia and New Zealand.

COUNTRIES AND GOODS CONCERNED

All European countries, including France, are concerned by these measures, as are Japan, Canada, the United States, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kosovo, Kazakhstan and Russia.

China and the UK may be subject to random inspections of goods in transit during the same period:

• China : between September 1st and December 31st
• UK : between December 1st and April 30th

It should be noted that ships transiting through one of the so-called "at-risk" countries will have to undergo appropriate treatment against BMSB.

The goods concerned by these measures fall into two categories:

• High-risk goods: compulsory treatment by fumigation or heat treatment. Examples of goods concerned: vehicles, wood, cork, etc.
• Risk goods: non-compulsory treatment, but subject to random inspections. Examples of goods concerned: paper, cardboard, salt, plastering materials, ores, fertilizers, etc.

WHAT TREATMENTS ARE AVAILABLE?

There are two possible treatments for marmorated stink bugs:

• Heat treatment: heat treatment at 56°C or higher on the coldest surface of the goods for 30 minutes. Individual goods shipped in bulk weighing less than 3 tons must be treated at over 60°C for at least 10 minutes, and must be accompanied by shipping documents proving their weight.
• Sulfuryl Fluoride fumigation treatment: injected directly into the hermetically sealed container. This treatment is not suitable for food-grade goods. Fumigation lasts between 12h and 24h depending on the fumigation method chosen, including for bulk shipments.

Wooden packaging integrated into the container is not affected by fumigation treatments, provided it is clean, free of BMSB and complies with ISPM15 requirements.
