EU-LATIN AMERICA FREE TRADE AGREEMENT

As Latin America's 3rd largest trading partner, the European Union had reached an agreement in 2019 on a free trade agreement with MERCOSUR. However, the agreement has not yet been ratified, as certain aspects are still under discussion with several European countries. This is holding up its implementation.

Specifically, MERCOSUR, which is already in force between Latin American countries, provides for the gradual elimination of customs duties between the two continents, mainly on food and agricultural products.

Both the Brazilian President and the European Commission wish to relaunch the EU's integration into MERCOSUR in order to optimize trade between the two continents. The EU was the largest foreign investor in the region in 2022. An agreement that is still relevant today.
